The Mystery is Over. MCC's Official Formation Date Revealed!

In October 1928, the Macleod and Watsonia Progress Association made preliminary arrangements to form a cricket club and play some scratch matches that year, with the intention of joining competition games in 1929. It's truly amazing that in 1928, only 12 houses had been built in Macleod, with a further 12 under construction in 1929.

A special meeting was held at the Presbyterian hall in Macleod on Wednesday, 14th August 1929, to discuss the formation of a cricket club. The Macleod Cricket Club was officially formed on the 14th August 1929. It was decided at that meeting to form a club under the name of Macleod and Watsonia, and to apply for entry into the local competition, Heidelberg District Cricket Association.

A committee was formed with the election of president Jim Taylor (a well-known Collingwood player) and Bill Blackburn as secretary. A dance in the Bundoora hall was held to raise funds for the fledgling team. Our first game was in second grade vs Heidelberg at Macleod Park on Saturday, 5th October 1929.

It's interesting that several new clubs entered the B section that year, and our club was listed in the draw by the HDCA as Macleod. We have a photo of our first team which took to the park in 1929. Fielding a consistent eleven each week would have been challenging.

Senior Coach Position Available

The Macleod Cricket Club is seeking applications for the position of playing senior coach for the upcoming 2022/23 season.

The Macleod Cricket Club is affiliated with the Diamond Valley Cricket Association and currently fields 4 senior, 7 junior sides and also runs a successful Woolworths Blast program, with some 50 participants.

We are looking to expand across all of these areas in the coming years. The club was established in 1939 and has enjoyed recent success with Barclay Shield premierships in the last 7 years. Our first XI remains in Barclay Shield.

Key Selection Criteria:

Leadership;
Teamwork;
Communication skills;
Ability to foster high performance and maintain an enjoyable culture;
Excellent cricket knowledge and ability; and
Level 1 or above coaching accreditation.

Some of the tasks the successful applicant will be required to undertake:

Organise training;
Individual and team coaching;
Some junior coaching (skills coaching); and
Assisting in selection; and
Providing clear instruction and feedback where required.

The club is prepared to assist the right candidate to obtain appropriate cricket coaching accreditation.

Remuneration is negotiable and will be dependent on qualifications, experience and ability.

Training Dates For The 2021/22 Season

With the 2021/22 season fast approaching, we’re excited to announce the training schedule for the upcoming pre-season.

Now, these dates were allocated prior to lockdown 5.0, so as we’re all used to, these dates may be subject to change.

Rest-assured, Nick, Dano and Shaun will put together a training program that will have us all cherry-ripe for the first seed of round 1.

It’s shaping up to be an exciting season, as our stream of young talent continues to develop with our experienced heads leading the way.

Tim Wise To Coach The MCC Junior Cricket Program

It’s with great excitement that we announce Tim Wise as the head coach of the junior cricket club.

Tim is the club's most recent senior coach, and will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our junior program. Tim has not only steered the club to two recent Barclay Shield grand final victories, but comes with an outstanding resume of experience and personal accolades within high standards of cricket.

Having someone like Tim oversee the entire program will ensure that all of our coaches are being supported and that our junior players are continually developing the fundamental skills in cricket.

Tim only adds to our already building junior program, and we look forward to seeing the further development in the future of our cricket club.

Registration dates for junior cricket will be coming out soon so stay tuned.

Coaching Announcements for the 2021/22 Season

After Nick Lynch coming on board as senior coach last year and doing a fantastic job in an extremely interrupted season, we’re pleased to announce that he will be joined by Dan O’Leary and Shaun Lumsden, who will serve as assistant coaches for the 2021/22 Season.

Dan and Shuan bring a wealth of experience to the coaching panel, and will allow us to offer a more personal development process for all of our players.

The appointment of Dan and Shaun also comes at a great time, with the club having a wealth of promising, yet raw young talent coming through the ranks. These young players have been influential in our second and third grade sides, and we look forward to them hopefully knocking on the door of senior selection this season with further development.

With pre-season training just around the corner - COVID restrictions pending - we encourage all of our players to make sure they’re staying active and to join us for the first session back on the track.
